Guests of The Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt Invited to Explore Estate
Posted , add a commentThe Ritz-Carlton Powerscourt, County Wicklow
Ireland is offering guests the opportunity to see more of the
historic landscape in Powerscourt Estate with exclusive access to
a beautiful river walk along the River Dargle.
The river walk road was built from 1867 to 1869
to enable the 7th Viscount of Powerscourt and his family to drive
their horse and carriage to the Waterfall along the river.
Guests can enjoy
the unspoilt landscape, rare species of trees and a walk in the
woodland along the river which boasts to have some of the best salmon and
sea trout on the east coast of Ireland.
The Powerscourt Estate is steeped in history
and this walk gives visitors even more insight into the past as
visitors walk past both the Middle gate Lodge and the Golden Gate
Lodge.
The Middle Gate Lodge was built beside the new iron bridge
in 1868 and this was where traditionally the Estate Forrester
lived and is also the point where the Glencree River meets the
Dargle River.
The Golden Gate Lodge was built in 1854 by the
Marquis of Londonderry, who was the 7th Viscount’s stepfather. The
Golden Gates were exhibited in Paris at the Great Exhibition in
1867 and bought by the 7th Viscount in 1869. This part of the
Estate has one of the best collections of conifers in the country
which were planted in 1870 after the river walk was complete.
Included in the collection are Douglas fir, Western red cedar,
Noble fir and Giant redwood amongst others. Some are still growing
and many are the tallest trees of their species in the country.
In addition to special room packages,
gourmet picnic baskets are available to guests who would like
to explore the countryside and stop for a picnic along the way on
this scenic route. Guests can choose from delicious options such
as traditional Irish smoked salmon and brown bread, creamy
Colcannon soup, Slaney Valley lamb chops with potato mousseline,
home made Pat? with pickles and horseradish cream and Irish
Guinness beef pie. There is also a children’s option and all
picnics come pre-packed in custom-designed baskets.
