Government of Zimbabwe to boost development of tourism industry

Harare — The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry is working closely with key stakeholders that include the United Nations World Tourism Organization, to maximize output of the sector.

Speaking after a march, a precursor to the main celebrations of the World Tourism Day to be held in Nyanga, Minister of Tourism Walter Mzembi said the Government was working with many stakeholders to boost the tourism industry.

“To ensure that Zimbabwe is not left behind in modern trends of development, my Ministry is working closely with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation especially regarding the issues of removing constraints to tourism development.

“The recent visit by the Assistant General of the global tourism body Professor Geoffrey Lipman is clear testimony,” said Minister Mzembi.

Other stakeholders that have been engaged in the Ministry’s efforts to revamp the performance of the sector include the Regional Tourism Organisation of Southern Africa.

“Through the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA), the Ministry is also working closely with RETOSA whose mandate is to promote and market regional tourism,” added Minister Mzembi.

The celebrations to be held in the country on September 27 will also mark the launch of thisisnyanga.com.

A program that will seek to market and promote Nyanga as a tourist attraction that therefore diversifies tourist attractions in and around Zimbabwe.

This year’s World Tourism Day global commemorations will be held in Ghana where tourism bodies from across the globe meet.

The main focus will be on the world’s cultural wealth and the important role sustainable tourism plays in revitalising local traditions and making them flourish as they cross other cultures.

Minister Mzembi said it might be necessary to re-coin the theme for this year’s event from the one set by the UNWTO to ‘Tourism Celebrating Diversity and Inclusitivity’ from ‘Tourism Celebrating Diversity’ since this will be the first celebration being held since the formation of the inclusive Government.
