Finding a vacation deal in the Caribbean

Posted August 29, 2008 , trackback

From Aruba to Jamaica, from the Cayman Islands to the Virgin Islands, there’s lots of ways for New Yorkers to enjoy the Caribbean.
Choosing the best deal and best vacation for your money depends on what you’re after.
A key cost factor is how easy it is to reach a certain destination. Shopping around for discounted package deals may produce bargains. Also pay attention to whether flights are nonstop or require connections.

It’s best to choose where to go based on your preferred activities. You’re more apt to find worthwhile golf courses in Bermuda or Aruba, for example, than the Bahamas. Certain islands are also more popular for diving and snorkeling, hiking or beach activities. Some islands and resorts are also much more kid- and family-friendly. If you’ll be traveling with children, investigate what activities are available and whether they are supervised.
If you’re interested in visiting historical sites and walking the streets, consider where you’ll be in a country before you get there.
In Jamaica, for example, many all-inclusive resorts are in remote areas and often require a $50 or more taxi ride to the closest restaurant or attraction — possibly stranding you for the duration of your stay.
For vacationers who want to dispense with some of the hassles of travel, another way to enjoy the Caribbean is by ship.
“For me, the most exciting and economical way to experience the Caribbean has always been by cruise ship,” insisted retired Upper West Side lawyer Ed Bohner.
“When you travel by cruise ship, all of your meals are included, you know the food quality will be good and you only need to unpack once during your trip,” he said. On some cruises, you may get to visit “between three and five Caribbean islands,” added Bohner, who’s a veteran of more than 10 Caribbean cruises.
He advised booking a cruise “that leaves out of Miami or San Juan, for example. If your ship departs from Manhattan, too much time is spent sailing to and from the Caribbean, as opposed to enjoying the islands.”
“The one time I traveled to the Caribbean without taking a cruise, it was to the British Virgin Islands,” Bohner said. “We flew there and stayed at a small resort. … It offered a very different type of vacation experience than staying at a large resort or traveling via cruise ship.”
