Amberian Peaks Lodge, Greer, Arizona
Posted August 21, 2009 , trackbackHave you ever wanted to travel to the end of the road and stay there? You can, if that road is Highway 373, Arizona’s road to nowhere. After winding through the White Mountains, the pavement ends at the small village of Greer (population approximately 122) where the Little Colorado River gurgles through a picturesque mountain valley. Sitting on a hill, literally at the end of the road, Amberian Peaks Lodge offers a variety of lodging choices wrapped in friendly, personal service.
When my husband and I walked through the lodge’s front door and into the two-storied rustic lounge, co-owner, Ann Poyas, greeted us with, “Hello, how was your drive?” Later, Ann’s husband and co-owner, Don, showed us to our upstairs accommodation, staying long enough to offer operating instructions for the satellite television, free wi-fi and other equipment. According to Ann and Don, all guests are greeted with a similar personal welcome.
The Amberian room ($165), decorated in a Southwestern theme, included two queen-size beds and a sitting alcove that contained a microwave and mini-refrigerator. We found terry velour bathrobes hanging from pegs in the full-sized bath. Two large windows looked out onto the parking lot.
The 1970’s era lodge building is a rambling affair that includes a dining room, which is open to the public, cantina, game room, meeting facilities and lodging options for romantics as well as families and large groups. The Honeymoon Suite, with a wood-burning fireplace and scenic views, sets the stage for romance. Families or large groups might prefer one of the penthouse suites. Rental cabins are also available.
The multi-tiered deck satisfied my need for a view. Lunch and dinner are served here during the summer season. We enjoyed a glass of Luna chardonnay in the late afternoon sun before chowing down on Verde Halibut served over grilled asparagus, mighty fine dining for a secluded mountain village.
Room rates at Amberian Peaks Lodge include a continental breakfast of breakfast breads, cereal and yogurt. If you’re fueling up for a day spent hiking or trout fishing, walk or drive into Greer for a heartier meal. Be sure to call ahead. During our stay, we found that restaurants were not always open.
Greer, AZ is located between Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque, New Mexico. It offers respite from summer’s desert heat and winter fun for snow lovers. Amberian Peaks Lodge provides the room at the end of the road.
